Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the Technical University of Denmark; Master's in Chemical Engineering from UAM Iztapalapa Campus; Chemical Engineer from the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla.
He joined UAM in 2006 as a Visiting Professor in the Department of Processes and Technology of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Division (DCNI) at the Cuajimalpa Campus. Since 2007, he has served as a Full Professor “C” in the same department, where he was appointed Department Head (2009-2013) and later Director of DCNI (2017-2021). He also held the position of Campus Secretary (2016-2017).
He worked as a Research Assistant in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU, 2005-2006); Visiting Researcher in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials at the University of Cagliari (2000); Project Researcher (2000-2001) and Assistant Professor (1993-1996) at UAM Iztapalapa; and Researcher at the National Fund for the Development of Arts and Crafts (1996-2000). He has conducted short research stays at the Universidad Católica del Norte and the Universidad de Antofagasta (2013, 2014, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2022); at the Technical University of Denmark (2014-2015); and at the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Johor Bahru (2015-2016).
He has taught courses and directed capstone projects and theses at both undergraduate and graduate levels at UAM Azcapotzalco, Cuajimalpa, and Iztapalapa campuses; Universidad del Valle de México; DTU; Universidad Veracruzana; Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla; and Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí.
He has served as principal investigator and collaborator in 12 sponsored research projects; in the Lignocellulosic Biofuels Cluster for the transportation sector; and in the ProBioRefine Academic Network (featuring researchers from UAM (Mexico); DTU (Denmark); Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (Korea); Graz University of Technology (Austria); Auburn University (United States); Tsinghua University (China); Chulalongkorn University (Thailand); and Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil)).
His academic productivity includes the supervision of 8 Ph.D. dissertations, 3 Master's theses, and 6 Bachelor's degree projects; 57 research articles published in indexed journals, and 12 book chapters. He has presented his research findings at 36 national and international conferences and published 62 full-length proceedings (27 international and 35 national). He has delivered 22 invited lectures at national and international institutions.
In addition to his administrative governance duties, he has participated as a member of the Academic Council, Campus Council, and the Divisional Council of Natural Sciences and Engineering, as well as served on committees for the revision of the curriculum and study programs for the Biological Engineering degree.
Distinctions awarded include the recognition One of the Top Reviewers for Computers & Chemical Engineering by ELSEVIER (2012-2013); Chemical Engineering Research and Design – Most cited author 2006-2009 for the article: R. Gani & M. Sales-Cruz (2006) Computer-aided modelling of short-path evaporation for chemical product purification, analysis and design, Chem.Eng. Res.&Des. 84 (7A): 583-594; the University Merit Recognition 2001 for Master's studies (awarded by Iztapalapa Campus); and Who’s Who in Science and Technology (conceded by Marquis Publishing in 2006). Since 2008, he has been a member of the National System of Researchers (SNII), currently at Level II; belongs to the Consolidated Academic Group Bioprocess Systems Engineering, Modeling and Simulation; and has held the PRODEP Desirable Profile recognition since 2007.
